The Security of a Fragile Sheep

The Security of a Fragile Sheep

Encouragement for anyone learning to find peace in uncertain seasons.

Psalm 23 has, over the last two years, become more than just the words and declarations of a man—it’s become my own life verse. I’ve borrowed it, embraced it, and made it mine.

I could sit with every single line of Psalm 23 and find something new to digest, but lately one phrase has been echoing in my heart:

“The Lord is my Shepherd”.

There is no questioning, we are dependent beings. We need food, shelter, love, care, and protection just to survive.

There are seasons in life when those needs feel especially intense—when we long not just for things but for Someone to guide, see, protect, and care for us.

As I prepare to welcome a newborn, I’m reminded of the constant care and attention a tiny person requires. But even as adults—especially those of us who carry the role of caregivers—we often forget that we still carry that same deep need.

We crave love, kindness, safety, and Someone beyond ourselves to rely on.

Many of us try to fill the deepest of our needs with possessions, hobbies, dreams, careers, relationships, or even family. While none of these are bad, the truth is, they all fall short.

Haven’t we seen how easily people, things, systems—even our own strengths—can fail us, and how little in life can ever be guaranteed?

Yet, have you noticed that, deep down, we all still long for a perfect, reliable, and faithful source of love?

A Shepherd, my shepherd, sees the vulnerability of His sheep and provides everything they need, often in the most unexpected ways.

I’m not afraid to admit that there are times I feel like a fragile sheep, where I've stepped into the most physically demanding experience of my life, while juggling countless voices and opinions, anxious about unknowns, and facing emotions I’ve never had to navigate before.

Yet in the midst of that vulnerability, as I close this humbling season of pregnancy, I carry one overwhelming truth: I am not alone. And never have been. I have a Shepherd.

All the needs of the heart are met by the One who knows its depths.

That truth gives me peace in the middle of uncertainty.

Maybe you’re also in a season where you feel in desperate need of perfect love, care, and protection. Maybe you feel vulnerable, stretched thin, or unsure of what’s next.

If so, let me encourage you: you don’t have to carry it all on your own. Lean into the Shepherd who knows you and loves you.

Challenge

Take one verse from Psalm 23 and read it each morning.

Question

What would it look like to rely on God as The Shepherd today—in your parenting, in your marriage, or in your own mental health?
